About CheapTents.com
We started CheapTents.com because we got tired of the same problem every budget camper faces: searching for "best cheap tent" and landing on sites that clearly never touched the products they recommend. Auto-generated listicles with affiliate links slapped on whatever has the highest commission. No real opinions, no honest tradeoffs, no actual camping experience behind the words.
We wanted to build something different — a small, focused site that reviews budget tents the way we'd advise a friend. Honest about what works, honest about what doesn't, and honest about where we make money (spoiler: affiliate links, which we fully disclose).
What We Cover
We focus exclusively on budget camping tents — roughly the $25 to $150 price range. This is where most people shop, and it's where the quality gap between products is widest. A bad $30 tent and a good $65 tent look similar in photos but perform completely differently in the field. Our job is to help you tell them apart.
We cover tents for every type of camper: casual weekenders, families, backpackers, festival-goers, and first-timers who just want something reliable without overthinking it.
Our Review Process
We don't have a lab with testing equipment and pressure gauges. We're not Wirecutter (though we admire their work). Here's what we actually do:
- Deep Amazon analysis. We read hundreds of verified reviews for each product, focusing on patterns — not individual opinions. When 50+ people mention the same leaking seam or the same impressively fast setup, that's data.
- Expert source cross-referencing. We check what outdoor publications (CleverHiker, GearJunkie, Switchback Travel, BetterTrail) and experienced reviewers say. If we agree with the consensus, we say so. If we disagree, we explain why.
- Community research. Reddit's r/camping, r/ultralight, r/CampingGear, and backpacking forums are goldmines of real-world experience from people with no financial incentive. We monitor these communities for long-term durability feedback that Amazon reviews miss.
- Real-world field notes. Our team uses budget tents. We've camped in Sundomes, carried Cloud-Ups on trails, and set up CORE cabins with kids running around. Our recommendations come from genuine experience, not spec sheets.
Our Editorial Standards
- Affiliate commissions don't influence rankings. We recommend the Coleman Sundome as our #1 pick because it's the best budget tent, not because it pays us the most (it doesn't — the CORE cabin has a higher commission). Our rankings would be identical with or without affiliate links.
- We name the downsides. Every product on our site has a "What We Don't Like" section. Cheap tents have real tradeoffs — pretending otherwise would be dishonest and unhelpful. Honest criticism builds trust, and trust is what earns your click.
- No pay-for-play. We don't accept payment from tent manufacturers for reviews or placement. Brands cannot buy a "Best Overall" badge. Our opinions are our own.
- No fake urgency. You won't find countdown timers, "only 3 left!" warnings, or made-up discount percentages on our site. That stuff is manipulative, violates Amazon's terms, and insults your intelligence.
- Prices are approximate. Amazon prices fluctuate constantly. We show approximate price ranges and always link to the current Amazon listing so you see the real price before buying.
How We Make Money
CheapTents.com earns revenue through the Amazon Associates Program. When you click one of our product links and make a purchase on Amazon, we earn a small commission (typically 4% of the sale price) at no extra cost to you. Amazon pays us — you pay the same price you'd pay going to Amazon directly.
This is how we keep the site running without ads, paywalls, or sponsored content. We believe it's the most honest monetization model for a review site: we only make money when our recommendations are good enough that you actually buy something. If we recommend junk, we don't earn. That alignment is by design.
